first, convert to yards by diving 12 feet and 15 feet by 3 since there are 3 feet in a yard. you will then have 4 yd by 5 yd. multiply these two dimensions to get 20 square yards. now that you know how many square yards (20) you need, you can multiply that by 12.99, which is $259.80. add the 4.5% tax by changing 4.5 into a decimal. you can do this by dividing 4.5 by 100 to get your deicimal equivalent of the percent. 4.5% would become 0.045. multiply your price (259.80) by 0.045 to get 11.69. this is how much tax should be added. you then add 11.69 to the original price (259.80) to get $271.49.
hope i was of some help. good luck!

ok so first abide by the hind and change the room unit from feet to yards. to do this you just devid the dimensions of the room by three, so now the room is 4yds by 5yds.
Now find the area of the room in yards by miltiplying 4 and 5
the area of the room is 20 yds. so you will need 20 yds of carpet to cover the whole floor.
Multiply $12.99 by 20 and you will get $259.80. This is the cost of carpeting the room without the tax.
Now to get the tax you miltiply it by the cost of the room: $259.80 * 4.5% (4.5%=.045)
you will get 11.691 (get rid of the 1 because you dont need it for money matters)
now add the tax to the room total to get $271.49 as your final price

3ft in a yard
so 12 ft by 15 ft = 4 by 5 yards
20 square yards
12.99 /square yard * 20 square yards =..... my calculator is behind me and i'm too lazy to turn around
This is the answer without tax. tax = 4.5% = .045
Now here is a short cut...so you odn't have to do adding
Cost * 1 = cost.
Cost *.045 = tax
Soooo...... Cost (1+.045) = Cost (1.045)
So take that answer you got earlier and multiply it by 1.045 and thats your final answer with tax.

There are 3 feet per yard.
12/3 = 4
15/3 = 5
So the room is 4 yards by 5 yards or 20 square yards.
20 x $12.99 = 259.80
to add 4.5% sales tax take 259.80 x1.045 = 271..49

12 ft by 15 ft is 4 yds by 5 yds. The area of the dining room is the length times the height, (4 x 5). The area is therefore 20 square yards. To find the cost of the carpet, multiply that by 12.99 which totals up to 259.8. Then add the 4.5 sales tax by multiplying .045 to 259.8 (which is 11.691 or basically $11.69), and adding that to the original equation, and you will find that Joe would need to have $271.49 to carpet his dining room. Do you get it? And is this you homework?

What part of this question do you not understand? Or are you totally lost? When dealing with word problems, it helps if you read a phrase at a time, and try to convert it into formulas.
The room is 12*15 FEET but carpet is sold in square yards. Here, you know, you have to convert feet to yard first. That will yeild, 4 yard * 5 yards. Then, convert that into SQUARE yards. 4 * 5 = 20 square yards.
Now, each square yard costs you 12.99 dollars. To arrive at total cost, 12.99 * 20.
Then, having that total cost (you figure it out), you must add tax. To arrive at tax, multiply the total cost by the tax rate. 4.5% means 0.045, so multiply the total cost by this figure.
Now you have tax, but you have to add the original cost to it to arrive at your cost + tax.

12*15=180 square feet;
180/9=20 square yards (9 square feet = 1 square yard).
$12.99*20=$259.80
Add tax: 1.045*$259.80=$271.49

12' by 15' = 4 yards by 5 yards = 20 square yards
20 square yards * $12.99/ square yard = $259.80
$259.80 * 1.045 = $271.49
Now do your own homework
