No they shouldn’t. They could have let you stay for free and just asked you to clean it. It’s either the economy that made them do this or they’re just like that.

Bit harsh really, but maybe they, his parents, were concerned about what would happen should you two split up. In other words, would they be happy to allow you to live in their house rent free (maybe with a new partner?)
As this is obviously something they want to have on a formal footing, I’d keep any invoice you have that’s connected with this property (eg. the cleaning up costs if it was filthy) and submit them for payment when you move out!! Takes two to tango me thinks.

in theory i don’t think they should have charged you. the house was standing empty anyway and it wasn’t as if they had been advertising it to rent. the fact that they’re your boyfriends parents should have meant something. they should have helped you get on your feet as you are just starting out. a house is safer and less prone to vandalism if somebody lives in it and you did them a favour by cleaning it and making it habitable. i bet they will now rent it out when you leave as you have made it more presentable to prospective tenants. anyway take it as a learning experience and good luck for the future.

Well, it sounds as though you knew the agreement before you moved in there.. By moving in you agreed to it. Because of that, I think it is more then fair that they charge you. If you thought the deal was bad, you should not have moved in.
As for the cleaning costs, I think it’d be unlikely they’d foot them. Obviously they were planning to sell the house filthy and all, so they were willing to take the cut and get rid of it rather then clean it up and get more. I wouldn’t have put the money into the house unless there was an agreement. I would’ve saved that money, beared the 4 months, and gotten out of there.. You gave them a free boost is all.
I know it might have seemed hopeless, but there are always other options– Ones that don’t rely on family. I’m a big believer in not borrowing money (or getting favors, discounts, ect..) from or to family unless everything is done with the proper paperwork. It only creates problems.
What’s done is done though. You need to keep up your end of the deal and pay it. Don’t deal with them again unless you know, understand, and agree with the agreement. Also, get it in writing and have both parties sign! If you don’t, you’ve just created a perfect family battleground.

NOTHING is free in this world – They have every right to expect you to pay ! Would they let anyone else stay there rent-free ? I don’t think so !
